Signature: Mumei
Year Made: Gindai
Forging Pattern: Masame
Tempering Pattern: Suguha
Dimensions: Nagasa:
26 1/8", Nakago: 9", Mihaba:
1 5/16 ", Sakihaba:
1",
Kasane: 9/32", Sori: 5/8"
Mountings: WW II gunto with one
piece habaki. These are Naval swords that have seen land warfare.
Commonly referred to as Marine landing swords and were used in the Pacific
theatre by Japanese Naval Landing forces during WW2. Some pretty well
done field repair in the upper and lower leather scabbard section.
Leather did not hold up very well in the tropical weather of the Pacific
islands. Nice honest wear on this nice example.
Overall Condition: The blade
is in good condition with no forging flaws. The number 830 is stamped
in the nakago (see picture). The leather on the saya is rough but all
there. The tsuka is solid but about 50% of the material under the ito
is gone. The tsuba has some significat rust on one side (see picture).
The habaki is in good condition but much of the silver wash is gone.

29 13/16", Tsuka: 10 1/8", Tsuba: 2
31/32", Fuchi: 1 17/32"
Mountings: The tsuba and
fuchikashira are iron with nice, dark patina. The moon menuki appears
to me silver and the leaf menuki appears to be brass.
Overall Condition: The saya
is in overall good condition with mostly minor abrasions. There is one
scratch that runs between two ribs that is down to the wood. This
could be easily filled with a little lacquer. The ito is still in good
condition but showing some ware at the top of some of the twist overlaps and
at the kashira end knot. The same beneath is in vary good condition.
The is a hole that goes through the tsuka just below the kashira. It
appears to have been deliberately drilled there. The kashira has a
little rust abrasion.

Company Officer's 1886 Pattern Kyu Gunto Mounts with Ancestral Blade |

Images |
Signature: Mumei, O-suriage
Year Made: Shinto
Forging Pattern: Hard to tell, possibly a tight itame
Tempering Pattern: Midare in nioi with nie
Dimensions: Blade Length: 25.375 inches
Nakago: 6.75 inches 6 mm thick and 29 mm wide at Hamachi
Mountings: Company officer's 1886 pattern Kyu gunto mounts in fair condition, missing some seppa but samé and wire straps are in good condition. "Rain" style habaki in gold washed copper, chrome plated saya with leather combat cover that has deteriorated and left corrosion on the saya. While all parts seem original to the sword the fit, when assembled, is not tight possibly due to missing seppa/spacers.
Overall Condition: Fair, Blade appears to be earlier shinto and has be cut down. Has a poorly carved or polished koshi -bi carved into the blade. The blade at the machi end is corroded with deep pits and rust. The sword has ware, scratches, pits, rust and nicks. There appears, however, to be enough temper left to take another polish and it's hard to tell sometimes if there is a jewel hidden beneath all the rust . |

Extremely Rare 1899 Pattern Junior Official's Sword of the Government General of Formosa |

Images |
Signature: None, factory made blade.
Year Made: 1899 or later
Forging Pattern: none.
Tempering Pattern: none
Dimensions: Blade Length: 25.5 inches
Nakago: unknown 4 mm thick and 18 mm wide at Hamachi
Mountings: Mounting as explained in listing title, An identical sword is pictured in Fuller and Gregory's Japanese Military and Civil Swords and Dirks, page 166.
Overall Condition: Good, the mountings are in very good condition with only slight chipping of the lacquer covered samé saya. The samé and wire grip is intact and the backstrap and "d" guard show little wear. Someone sharpened the blade with a grinder, other than that the sword as a whole is in very collectible condition. We did not try to disassemble the sword as the ferrule nut that holds it together has not been moved in at least 60 years and we did not wish to break it.
This is a very rare variation, the last one I had with a blade in better
condition sold for $1250. |

Very nicely forged blade with nice active itame hada, a nice Bohi and an
exceptional nakago. It does have a small dent about .25 inch wide.
The sword has its original polish but was shined up with polishing compound
which makes it very difficult to photograph its details. Hamon is all
present and the boshi is healthy. Some rust spots, a great candidate
for minor restoration. |

Overall Condition: The blade

Tempering Pattern: Suguha based midare
Dimensions: Blade Length: 25.75 inches
Nakago: 6.5 inches 6 mm thick and 31 mm wide at Hamachi
Mountings: Sirasaya in very good condition except ivory insert for mekugi missing on one side. Nice "rain" pattern silver washed copper habaki with some of the silver worn off.
Overall Condition: Good, some spider rust, minor pitting and ware. A very hefty sword. ko-suguha midare hamon with much activity in nie. Has sunagashi, ji nie, inazuma and much chikei in the ji. Hada is very prominent and sword can be enjoyed as is but a polish would really bring out the activities in this sword. There is evidence of a stamp possibly being removed from the nakago. I have provided an arrow indicating the spot and a close up photo so that you can make up your own mind. The sword is obviously hand made and it would be difficult in the extreme to get such activities without the use of traditional materials. It is possible it had an arsenal stamp (many gendaito do) and was being sent to Japan for shinsa where sometimes genuine swords are refused access into the country do to the presence of a stamp. In any case there is much to enjoy in this blade and the small active hamon reminds one of the early Koto swords. |

Dimensions: Blade Length: 26.25 inches
Nakago: 7.75 inches 7 mm thick and 31 mm wide at Hamachi
Mountings: '34 Pattern Shin-Gunto mounts that have been restored by an amateur, copper habaki, latch is broken. Overall appearance is good.
Overall Condition: Fair, sword has been cleaned with a buffer, lines are rounded off, very difficult to see any detail in hamon, especially at the boshi, a few pits but nothing major. Nakago also appears to have been cleaned and area where an arsenal stamp would have gone has no visible yasuri mei. Blade is not sharp. To sum up, it is a katana made by a listed Seki smith which is probably hand made (would need a window polished to tell for sure). The restoration, while not professionally done leaves an attractive sword and mounts for exhibit and would be fine "as is" for a collector of military items. Would take a polish if it were determined that it is traditionally made and warrants one. |

Nakago: 8.75 inches 6 mm thick and 32 mm wide at Hamachi
Mountings: Saya only, 1944 shin-gunto version. Some paint loss, no dents. No habaki or other parts.
Overall Condition: Good, sword has been buffed almost to a chrome like shine making the hamon, boshi and any details almost impossible to see and impossible to photograph. There is activity visible in the hamon and the smith's statement (motte tamahagane) made with tamahagane or specially smelted sword steel would indicate that this blade is a traditionally made gendaito. It would need to be properly polished to see the workmanship of this sword. It is a nicely proportioned albeit hefty blade as was customary at the time. There is minor pitting that would easily be removed by a polish. |

Dimensions: Blade Length: 20.75 inches
Nakago: 6.25 inches 7 mm thick and 32 mm wide at Hamachi
Mountings: '34 pattern army shin-gunto mounts in fair condition. Very nice silver foil habaki with interesting pattern. Imitation samé on tuska which is otherwise in good condition. Normal tsuba for leather strap style retainer, in good condition. Saya is plain wood under a leather combat cover which has deteriorated and torn.
Overall Condition: Fair, A very hefty Shinto wakizashi with some ware, many chips, the deepest is 2 mm and the tip of the kissaki broken off. There is enough temper remaining to have these all repaired by a polisher. Would polish up to be a nice solid and attractive example of a Shinto Wakizashi. A nice ancestral blade carried off to war and deserving of preservation. |
