Rusty Wakizashi

Signature: Mumei
Year Made: Shinshinto?
Forging Pattern: Itame?
Tempering Pattern: Suguha?
Dimensions:   Nagasa:  17 9/16", Nakago:  5 3/8", Mihaba:  1 1/16", Sakihaba:  15/32", Kasane:  187/32", Sori:  5/16"
Mountings:  There is a bare wood saya and one piece silver foiled habaki.
Overall Condition: The blade is covered with rust that is red and probably more resently active.  It's difficult to tell what the forging pattern or hamon are do to the rust and discoloration.  There does not appear to be any damage beyond the rust which should all disappear with a good polish.  The edge is good enough to slice paper.  The one piece silver foiled habaki is in good condition with only a very small loss of foil on the hamachi.  The saya may have been covered with leather.  There is a kozuka pocket and the saya is cut for a kirigata.  This was probably made around WW II and is actually pretty solid and usable.
